Endonuclease: An enzyme that produces an oligonucleotide by hydrolyzing a phosphodiester bond inside a molecular chain in a nuclease, and corresponds to an exonuclease. From the specificity of the substrate, it can be divided into enzymes that decompose DNA such as DNaseI and DNaseII; enzymes that decompose RNA such as RNase and RNaseT1. In general, there is no base specificity, but there are also enzymes such as spleen RNase, RNaseT1, or a restriction enzyme that recognize and cleave a specific base or base sequence.
