Tricarboxylic acid cycle: a metabolic pathway prevalent in aerobic organisms that distributes mitochondria. Because several major intermediate metabolites in this cycle are citric acid containing three carboxyl groups, it is called the tricarboxylic acid cycle, also known as the citric acid cycle or the TCA cycle; or by the discoverer Hans Adolf Krebs (English 1953) The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was named Krebs Cycle. The tricarboxylic acid cycle is the final metabolic pathway of the three major nutrients (sugars, lipids, amino acids), and is also the hub of carbohydrate, lipid and amino acid metabolism.
