Leptis Magna is the largest city in Tripoli's Taniagu district. It is located on what is now the Mediterranean coast of northwest Libya and contains some of the best Roman architectural relics in the world. It was founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century and later settled by the Katakis, probably at the end of the 6th century BC. The city became an important Mediterranean and trans - Saharan trading center. Leptis Magna became one of the most famous cities of the Roman Empire. It flourished under Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211) and later experienced some decline due to regional conflicts.
