Colonization is the process by which a great power seeks and acquires possession of economically, politically and culturally underdeveloped regions abroad. Beginning in the 15th century, spurred on by the principles of mercantilism, European countries, led by Britain, Portugal, and Spain, acquired large colonies on the islands of South and North America, Asia, and the oceans. The imperialist expansion caused by the Second Industrial Revolution after 1870 led to the acquisition of large colonies by these imperialist countries in Africa, Australia, and asia that had not yet become colonies. After the Spanish-American War of 1898, the United States participated extensively in colonial activities.
The most basic meaning of colonization was to raise the people of the conquered areas like livestock through various means, and then to obtain the wealth of their labor.
