Portugal was the first European colonial power to establish power in Malaysia, occupying Malacca in 1511, followed by the Netherlands. However, the British first established bases in Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Penang and Singapore, and eventually achieved hegemony on the territory of present-day Malaysia. The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 established the boundary between British Malaya and the Dutch East Indies (later Indonesia).
