It belongs to the first major class in the enzymatic classification. The substrate oxidized in the reaction is called a hydrogen donor or electron donor, and the reduced substrate is called a hydrogen acceptor or electron acceptor. When the acceptor is O2, the enzyme that catalyzes the reaction is called oxidase, and in other cases is called dehydrogenase. Different dehydrogenases are almost always named after the name of their substrate. Such as succinate dehydrogenase-catalyzed reactions (Figure 1).

This reaction is reversible, under certain conditions, the balance of this reaction tends to the left, then this enzyme can be called antibutenic acid reductase. Sometimes it can also be named after the product due to its special importance, such as cortisone reductase.
